With the introduction of The Onyx series, Big Green Egg breaks away from its long-standing color tradition. Inspired by the gemstone, this stunning edition features a deep, dark glaze with a subtle green hue revealed in sunlight — creating a truly unique and premium look.

The expansive cooking area of The Onyx makes it easy to prepare all your favourite dishes and those of your family and friends. Simultaneously if you want, because the Large provides enough space to cook for 8 people. All that available space makes it a snap to prepare full three-course menus.

All Large accessories fit seamlessly on The Onyx.  In addition, The Onyx is the first EGG to feature the new Dual Zone Cooking Grids.

 

 

Two Innovations, Endless Potential

The beauty of The Onyx runs deeper than its sleek dark glaze. This is the first model to showcase two significant upgrades to the basic functionality of the EGG.

The Onyx Large Essential Collection is a highly comprehensive kamado, thanks to the redesigned half stainless steel grids and the Dual Zone Deflector Kit. This innovative tool can be used as either a full or half heat shield, allowing you to cook indirectly or both directly and indirectly at the same time. It forms the basis for dual-zone cooking. Lighting the charcoal has never been so quick and easy, thanks to the Quick Light System supplied. The kamado reaches the right temperature within 15 minutes.

 

1. Quicker to Light

The Quick Light Kit, which allows you to light the coals from below, makes firing up the EGG quicker and cleaner and leads to more even heat distribution.

 

 

2. Easier to Set Up

The Dual Zone System makes it much easier to set up and switch between the EGG’s many cooking modes. It even allows you to use multiple modes simultaneously.

Why the name The Onyx?

Onyx is a deep, rich, dark gemstone. A beautiful jewel, as is this colour variant of the Big Green Egg.

What makes The Onyx so special?

This special release was created in direct response to consumer feedback, offering a new colour designed to integrate seamlessly into premium outdoor spaces. It delivers the same unmatched quality and performance you expect—now with a sophisticated finish that elevates any garden or terrace.

Will it be available in all sizes?

Initially, The Onyx will be offered in Large and XLarge sizes – two of the most popular choices for our customers.

Is The Onyx available as stand alone?

The Onyx is available in various bundles. The Large comes in a bundle, with or without the intEGGrated Nest+Handler, the Dual Zone Deflector Kit and 2× Half Cast Iron Grid and as an outdoor kitchen in an EGG Frame with Expansion Frame including a Stainless Steel Grid Insert, 2x Distressed Acacia Wood Insert or 2x Acacia Wood Insert, 3x Caster Kit, Dual Zone Deflector Kit and 2x Half Cast Iron Grid. The XLarge comes in a bundle, with or without the intEGGrated Nest+Handler, convEGGtor, convEGGtor Basket and 2× Half Cast Iron Grid.

How long will it be available?

The Onyx will be introduced to the European market in Q2 2026 as a Special Edition. If successful, The Onyx may become a permanent addition to the Big Green Egg family.

Why is the colour of The Onyx so special?

It took us about a year to develop the ultra dark finish of The Onyx. When you open the dome, the magic happens, with the sunlight on the EGG you can spot a touch of green, keeping The Onyx a member of the Big Green family. A nod to the original.

Why does Big Green Egg add a colour to it's world famous green? Did you loose your religion?

The decision to create a new colour Big Green Egg was not taken lightly. The desire for it was high amongst our fanbase, who wanted a darker coloured kamado, better matching their outdoor spaces, but with the Big Green Egg quality. The Onyx delivers the same unmatched quality and performance you expect—now with a sophisticated ultra dark finish that elevates any garden or terrace.

Can I get other colours?

No. The Onyx is the only alternative colour we’re offering.

Does the darker finish of The Onyx get hotter in the sun compared to the green finish of the original Big Green Egg?

Although the darker glaze colour may absorb slightly more heat from direct sunlight, this has no impact whatsoever on the temperature inside the Big Green Egg during use. The high-quality ceramic ensures a consistently stable and precisely controllable temperature in the Big Green Egg at all times. So your cooking experience remains exactly the same with The Onyx as with the original green Big Green Egg.

Does the darker colour show scratches, stains, or weathering more easily?

No. The Onyx finish is applied to the same high-quality ceramic and glaze as the original Big Green Egg, which is extremely durable and weather-resistant. Normal use, cleaning, and outdoor exposure will not cause noticeable scratches or stains. Like all Big Green Eggs, it’s built to withstand the elements and maintain its premium look for years.

1. Tiny speckles on the surface, will be slightly more visible on The Onyx, relative to green due to higher contrast.

2. Crazing are slightly more noticeable due to the higher contrast.

3. The interior of ceramics have some dark coloured freckles

Are there additional accessories in the colour onyx?

Not yet.

Can I mix and match accessories from the other Big Green Egg models?

Yes! All accessories designed for the traditional Large or XLarge Big Green Egg will fit the same-sized The Onyx Eggs perfectly.

Where can I buy The Onyx Big Green Egg? Can I see it in person before purchasing?

The Onyx will be available via official Big Green Egg resellers across Europe. At Platinum and Gold resellers, The Onyx will be displayed in the showroom for customers to experience before purchase.

Is it available online or only through local resellers?

The Onyx can be purchased both in-store through local resellers and online.

Why is The Onyx slightly more expensive than the original?

The production process of The Onyx is more costly than that of the original. In addition, The Onyx includes two innovative, better Half Stainless Steel Grids.

Will the warranty be the same?

Absolutely. Our limited lifetime warranty on ceramics applies to The Onyx just as it does to the original Big Green Egg. Colour is not covered under warranty, but in the rare case of a ceramic replacement, you may receive a different shade – making your EGG even more unique.

What are the dark speckles inside The Onyx Big Green Egg on the ceramic?

You may notice darker speckles on the inside of The Onyx Big Green Egg. This is a normal and intentional result of our production process.

In the original green Big Green Egg, lighter speckles are visible in the ceramic. For The Onyx, we have implemented a sustainable production process. As part of this approach, we reuse ceramic scrap material and glaze remnants, which are carefully processed and mixed into the ceramic composition for recycling purposes.

Because the recycled glaze material is incorporated into the ceramic body of The Onyx, darker speckles may appear inside the Egg. This visual difference is a direct result of our efforts to make the production process sustainable and reduce material waste.

These speckles are purely aesthetic and have no impact on the quality, durability, or performance of the product.
